About Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
-EMDR is offered by Kendra Doukas
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that works to rewrite negative experiences and traumatic events and store these in our memories in a more positive and healthier way.
Often, when people have a traumatic or unpleasant event, they process the event in an incomplete way and are left only with the negative thought patterns, emotions and body sensations. EMDR works to reprocess these events in a way that links them also to more positive, adaptive insights about the events. It helps to recognize negative thought patterns that are driving our lives.
Through EMDR, people find where their negative thoughts, emotions, and even body sensations originate so that they can feel more confident about themselves and finally end the pain, anxiety, and depression they are experiencing in their lives.
EMDR is research-based and shown to be very effective in helping survivors of abuse, veterans, and those people with Acute Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. People do not have to feel "traumatized" or "scarred" to benefit from EMDR treatment.
If you are suffering from being caught in negative thought patterns or if you have a lack of confidence in any areas in your life, EMDR can be extremely helpful. It is even used with actors, musicians, and athletes to decrease performance anxiety. It is believed that EMDR works by similarly to REM sleep by engaging a cross-brain reprocessing of our memories. Clients who receive EMDR therapy still have memories of unpleasant events, but they are no longer "charged" or triggering.
Although EMDR is often recommended for survivors of abuse or trauma, anyone can benefit from EMDR.
For more information on EMDR therapy, you can visit the EMDR Institute's website at, http://www.emdr.com.
