About Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the use of hands to put motion into spinal joints that are hypomobile or out of their normal position. Joints that are not in their normal or optimal position are subluations. By doing this we can relieve pain and normalize movement and function of the spine. Several studies have shown that acute and chronic chiropractic patients have less pain, better patient satisfaction and chiropractic care is more cost effective than other forms of treatment. Chiropractic is the largest of all the alternative professions.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care has many benefits, including, but not limited to:

  • pain relief
  • headache relief
  • increased mobility and range of motion
  • decreased stiffness and muscular spasms
  • arthritic joint pain relief
  • increased joint health
  • increased performance and energy
  • increased sense of well being and relaxation
  • increased balance and coordination
  • reduced degeneration and risk of injury
  • enhanced tissue healing
  • decreased tissue inflammation

Chiropractic and Pregnancy:

Chiropractic in pregnancy focuses on the well-being of both the mother and developing child. As the mother and child progress, the nervous systems of each are very vulnerable to abnormal development. With added weight gain and hormonal changes, mothers often develop lower back pain, sciatica, wrist and hand weakness and a variety of other symptoms. Balancing the pelvis and obtaining proper spinal alignment during pregnancy can result in faster, easier labors with many mothers reporting a decrease in pain and ease of progression through each stage of delivery. Additionally, the integrity of a mother's nervous system directly correlates to the lifetime potential of her unborn child. As the nerve impulses from a mother are limited through nervous interference, her growing child also suffers from decreased nervous function and can develop at a slower rate if left uncorrected. By returning the mother's nervous system to 100% function, her growing child benefits and can reach optimal potential in-utero.

Webster Technique for Intra-uterine constraint release (Relief of Breech-presentation):

Dr. Larry Webster, D.C., FICPA, first noticed the correlation between pelvic subluxation, uterine ligament imbalance and breech-presentation in developing pregnancies. His technique addresses the malposition of the sacrum and anterior uterine ligaments and the correlation of abnormal fetus presentation in-utero. A trained Webster Practitioner identifies the imbalances in both the pelvis and uterus and reverses abnormal torsion, thus allowing the fetus to drop into normal (vertex) position prior to birth.

In a normal pregnancy, a mother should expect to feel her unborn child complete several milestones prior to birth, one of which is the turning of her child in-utero around the seventh month of development. Children initially develop in a “head up” position for months 1-7 of development. During the seventh month (and occasionally later) the child will turn “head down” or “vertex” to prepare for descent into the birthing canal during labor. In some cases the fetus will be unable to make this transition from “head up” to “head down” before labor is imminent, and alternative procedures for delivery must be used to preserve the life of the infant. In western medicine, a cesarean-section surgical birth is performed causing severe risks to both mother and child. If caught early enough (ideally before 37 weeks of gestation), a trained Webster Chiropractor can identify abnormal pelvic positioning and perform gentle and specific adjustments to the spine, thus relieving uterine torsion and fetal constraint. By releasing the abnormal pressure on the developing child, in the majority of cases the fetus will turn from the breech-presentation (head-up) to vertex (head down) before delivery, allowing for a significantly easier birth for both mother and child.

Chiropractic and Pediatrics:

It is a common misconception that chiropractic care is only for the adult, or only in instances following a trauma. While it is correct that chiropractic adjustments do assist in these instances, chiropractic is also extremely beneficial in the life of a developing child. The nervous systems is by far the most important of all systems as it governs the development of every organ, muscle and tissue in the entire body. If imbalances exist in the spine, the function of every single system can be compromised. By relieving the pressure on a child's spinal cord, development is unhindered and in many cases parents notice an increase in growth and immunity.

Doctors of Chiropractic specially trained and certified in pediatric care understand the delicate nature of a child's spinal system. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) delivers post-graduate education in the field of pediatric adjustment, allowing for a very gentle and subtle alignment of even a newborn spine. Dr. Friedhoff is trained in the identification of pediatric subluxation and provides gentle, specific adjustments using a very small impulse to restore nervous function. Adjustment to the spine has been shown to relieve many pediatric conditions such as colic, ear infections, lowered immunity, difficulty breastfeeding, cognitive development and many, many others.
