About Acupuncture
Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (Energy) and Xue (Blood) through distinct meridians or pathways that cover the body somewhat like nerves and blood vessels do. According to ancient theory, acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from areas where it is in excess. In this way acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energetic balance of the body. In Chinese there is a saying, “there is no pain if there is a free flow of Qi: if there is pain, there is no free flow”.

Does acupuncture hurt?
Your practitioner uses individually packaged sterilized needles and inserts each needle at a specific depth depending on point selection and body constitution. If you practitioner has obtained the correct stimulus the patient should feel some heaviness, distension, tingling, or electric sensation either around the needle or up or down the affected meridian. How many treatments will I need? That depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint. You may need only a single treatment for an acute condition. A series of five to fifteen treatments may resolve chronic conditions. Some degenerative conditions may require more.
What can it help?
Acupuncture is effective in treating a wide variety of conditions that affects many systems including: neurological, emotional, physiological, musculoskeletal, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory alignments. Some of these treatable conditions include but are not limited to:
Neurological: headache, migraine, neuralgia, post-operation pain, stroke residuals
Digestive: abdominal pain, hyperactivity, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, acid reflux, nausea
Other: sinusitis, tonsillitis, asthma, PMS, stress reduction, blood pressure, common cold, bronchitis, impotence, menopause, immune system
Five-Element Acupuncture
Five-Element acupuncture started with the observation of characteristics and interactions in nature. These same characteristics and dynamics are a part of every human being. Nature has shown us time and again how important and essential that balance is in our biosphere. If this balance is disturbed for only a short time negative reaction can occur. If balance is disturbed for long periods then the impact can be severe. This balance is the same within our internal system as well.
The five-elements is a sophisticated system that acts as a diagnostic map and helps lead us to the root or source of all problems in our life based on individual disharmony. This system allows us to move beyond the parameters of conventional medicine and reach into the depths of the very essence of any imbalance whether it is physiological or psychological based. This integral map can help prevent problems or treat less severe and chronic problems. Depending on the goal of the client, it can even help us to transform our lives.

Brian Bowen, a Certified Massage Therapist and a Licensed Acupuncturist and owner of Integrative Health, Inc., has dedicated his life to the study of the intricate human being and its capacity to heal physically, mentally, and spiritually.
A graduate of Body Therapy Institute in North Carolina and the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Brian has studied not only traditional Chinese medicine but also one of the oldest forms of Chinese medicine called five-element acupuncture.
From these studies and several years of practice he has developed his own techniques that he incorporates into his Greenwood village-base practice. He has studied with one the United States leading acupuncturist and is creating a series of instructional videos for other therapists. Brian now not only treats specific physical complaints and internal syndromes, but also specializes in postural rehabilitation and dynamic movement patterning.
By creating an evolutionary tension for our created selves or “self image” his treatments are designed to move you from a place of stagnation in your life process or life situation to a consistent and permanent liberated state.
This allows Brian to treat his patients with a more integrated approach helping him to create a path to wellness.

Meagan explored several adventurous avenues before discovering acupuncture as her destined profession. She’s guided white water rafters in Buena Vista, led mountain bikers and climbers in Moab and even started her own triathlon club at Metropolitan State College. A two-time recipient of the Jesse Bollinger Athletic Achievement Scholarship, Meagan was also a mogul skier for the Steamboat Springs Freestyle Ski Team. It was after an injury there that she unearthed new trails toward healing through massage, physical therapy, chiropractic work and acupuncture.
With the arrival of her god-daughter from China, her studies in Health Sciences, a burgeoning interest in eastern philosophies, and a job as a chiropractic assistant with East West Health Center, Meagan found her path, enrolling at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
There, she studied Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology, worked at the school’s Chinese Herbal pharmacy and continued to observe at the health center, far exceeding the school’s field work requirements. After graduating in 2004 with a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine, Meagan traveled alone to Harbin, a province in Northern China to continue her studies in acupuncture, gynecology, and Tui Na massage, gathering techniques and wisdom from local practitioners. Meagan is always broadening her knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine as it relates to common medical issues. Most recently, she studied with fertility specialist Randine Lewis, PhD in Texas, Pediatrics and TCM with Michelle Uthoff - Campbell, and received her certificate in Facial Rejuvenation with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs in New York with Virginia Doran, M.Ac., L.Ac., LMT. She is currently a teaching assistant at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Meditation and leads meditation groups for Camp Experience, (a mountain retreat for women).
Since establishing her own practice, Meagan has treated hundreds of patients, providing solutions for musculoskeletal pain, digestive health, women’s issues, insomnia and much more. With an effervescent personality and a dedication to her craft, she often brings principles of her personal yoga practice along with a spiritual wealth of wisdom and inspiration to her treatment. Meagan says that acupuncture allows her to work in a safe and replenishing environment, “create” every day and remain true to her own health, while helping others understand the benefits of this time-honored healing tradition.

Debra Kuhn, a licensed acupuncturist in Colorado and California, is also a nationally recognized Diplomate in Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
After graduating magna cum laude from New York University, Debra moved to San Diego to attend Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, one of the most prestigious acupuncture schools in the country, where she was trained in both Western and Eastern Medicine. This dual training, Debra feels, was essential to understanding both sides of her patient’s conditions and therefore truly providing integrative medicine.
During her time in San Diego, Debra was honored to be one of the first acupuncture interns to work in the Oncology/Hematology Department of a Children’s Hospital. Additionally, alongside her private practice, she had rotations with San Diego Hospice and UCSD’s free health clinic.
Debra focuses her practice in the treatment of internal medicine including (but not limited to) women’s health, auto-immune disorders, and pain management. Her practice consists of acupuncture, herbal and nutritional therapies and lifestyle counseling including stress reduction and breathing exercises. She is certified in Virginia Doran’s style of facial rejuvenation acupuncture and Clean Needle Technique. Additionally, Debra has worked together with several reproductive endocrinologists and is available to accompany fertility patients during their transfers.
In addition to private practice, Debra is a lecturer and author on various aspects of Chinese Medicine and is available for speaking engagements.
